A Portrait of the Translator Susanne Lange

Susanne Lange is one of the most interesting and revered translators into German. Her re-translation of Don Quixote earned her the 2003 Zug Translation Grant and in 2009 the German Academy of Language and Literature’s Johann Heinrich Voss Prize. Ten years later, she was nominated for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize for her translation of the debut novel Gringo Champ by the 19-year-old Mexican writer Aura Xilonen. She also translates Spanish and Hispanic American poetry. Her translation of the Chilean writer Lina Meruane’s novel Sistema Nervioso was published by AKI-Verlag in 2023.

What does Susanne Lange focus on in her work? What motivated her to embark on re-translating the 1000-page Spanish classic and how did she go about it? What language did she find for the Mexican migrants to the United States who populate Xilonen’s novel? Is there such thing as a translator’s own style? Using specific examples, the conversation and reading will cast a light on various aspect of Lange’s translation work.

Susanne Lange will be in conversation with Gabriela Stöckli, managing director of Translation House Looren. The readings will be by the actor, director and translator Yves Raeber.
